A Real American Hero GI Joe toy figures started as the brainchild of Stan Weston in 1963. Noting the popularity of Barbie, he figured there was a market for a similar toy for young boys based off a military theme. Hasbro picked up his idea and in 1964, the GI Joe figure line was launched, identical in scale to Barbies. GI Joe evolved through the next couple of decades but was discontinued in 1978. |
1982 saw the successful relaunch of the GI Joe toy line. This time, they modeled the successful Star Wars 3 3/4 inch scale figurines and combined it with an innovative marketing strategy, also releasing a wildly popular cartoon and comic book series. The new figurine size also allowed Hasbro to develop vehicles and playsets to add to the appeal. GI Joe’s appeal would also lead to a number of spin off merchandising spawning board games, video games, and t-shirts.
GI Joe’s mass appeal can be traced back to the over arching good vs. evil theme and continues to be incredibly popular with a old fans and new fans alike. With a new movie set to come out this summer, it seems inevitable there will be a resurgence of interest in GI Joe toys and merchandise. Whether you are a grizzled GI Joe collector or new to the series, it has never been easier to find GI Joe toys for your interest.
